Recent Introductions of Parasitoids against Eldana
نویسنده
چکیده
Early attempts at the biological control of the pyralid borer Eldana saccharina Walker were discussed in a paper presented at the Congress of the South African Sugar Technologists' Association in 1979. Since then further introductions of both egg and larval parasitoids have been made and include: Trichogrammatoidea eldanae Vigianni, Trichogramma sp and Telenomus applanatus Bin & Johnson (from West Africa); Trichogramma australicum Girault (from Taiwan); Telenomus sp (from Bolivia); Descampsina sesamiae Mesnil (from West Africa); Allorhogas sp (from Central America). An account is given of procedures, and results are discussed. Briefmention is made of the release into sugarcane fields of a parasitic bethylid wasp(Goniozus sp)which occurs naturally in indigenous Cyperaceae.

Patterns of Damage from Eldana Saccharina (lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in the South African Sugar Industry
In the South African sugar industry, internal tissue of sugarcane stalks attacked by Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) often turns a red colour as a result of secondary infection by various organisms. In the factory, less sugar is extracted from these sections because sucrose is inverted to glucose. The length of stalk that is red thus provides an indication of the amount of sug...
متن کاملResistance Mechanisms of South African Sugarcane to the Stalk Borer Eldana Saccharina (lepidoptera: Pyralidae): a Review
Despite plant resistance constituting one of the major defences of South African sugarcane against the stalk borer, Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) (Leslie and Keeping, 1996; Keeping, 1999; Keeping and Govender, 2002), little has been published regarding the mechanisms upon which this resistance is based. This paper reviews published and unpublished information on this subject...
متن کاملThe Effect of Selected Protease Inhibitors and Lectins in Artificial Diet on Survival and Growth of Eldana Saccharina Larvae
Protease inhibitors, which can inhibit insect digestive enzymes, and carbohydrate binding lectins are potential control mechanisms against herbivorous insects. Larval midgut extracts fi-om Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were assayed for protease activity in the presence of protease inhibitors in order to determine the dominant protease types (serine, aspartic, metalloor cyste...
متن کاملPSEUDOMONAS FLUORESCENs GENETICALLY ENGINEERED TO PRODUCE AN INSECT TOXIN: A CULM:lNATION OF FIVE
The bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis has been used as a microbial insecticide for half a century. However, limitations on its use against a pest such as Eldana saccharina Walker are that: a) B. thuringiensis is a soil-inhabiting organism and is therefore not persistent on plants, and b) the proteinaceous insecticide is degraded by sunlight when the bacterial cells lyse at the end of their life ...
متن کاملVerbs in Applied Linguistics Research Article Introductions: Semantic and syntactic analysis
This study aims to investigate the semantic and syntactic features of verbs used in the introduction section of Applied Linguistics research articles published in Iranian and international journals. A corpus of 20 research article introductions (10 from each journal) was used. The corpus was analysed for the syntactic features (tense, aspect and voice) and semantic meaning of verbs. The finding...
